About - D-Tech Class 8

Course Overview:

The design technology class will introduce students to various forms of technology which are used in the design of:
products
graphics
user experiences

We will also explore what makes good design and how a design process can help us achieve better results.

For product design, we will be using Fusion 360 for CAD along with 3D printers as well as a laser cutter. Lego can be used for prototyping, if needed. It's possible we will use a CNC router for subtractive manufacturing, depending on the class's interests.

We will be using other software, as needed, to accomplish our design goals. Software will be provided to students through school licenses. Students are responsible to get software loaded onto their machines within the given deadlines. They will be assisted with this.

We will be using a design cycle approach in order to create the best possible solutions and products. We will spend considerable effort looking at how this process works and how to implement it. Students are encouraged to create authentic products and solutions to use at school and in the community at large. Some of these may be purely artistic, providing a useful message, while others may be practical in nature.
Design Cycle: Credit IB MYP

Assessment:

Students will be assessed on our Design Technology standards:

Inquiry and Analyzing: Students are presented with a design situation, from which they identify a problem that needs to be solved. They analyze the need for a solution and conduct an inquiry into the nature of the problem.

Developing Ideas: Students write a detailed specification, which drives the development of a solution. They present the solution.

Creating the Solution: Students plan the creation of the chosen solution and follow the plan to create a prototype sufficient for testing and evaluation.

Evaluating: Students design tests to evaluate the solution, carry out those tests and objectively evaluate its success. Students identify areas where the solution could be improved and explain how their solution will impact on the client or target audience.
